The Honourable Nancy J. Hartling, ONB was appointed to the Senate as an independent Senator for New Brunswick in November 2016 after a career focused on families and social issues. Senator Hartling has advocated extensively for socio-economic issues facing families, particularly single parents and their children and is a dedicated proponent of social justice and human rights. She is an advocate for issues relating to gender equality, mental health, juvenile diabetes, ageing, poverty, and Basic Income.

  • Senator Hartling joined the Independent Senators Group (ISG) and is a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples, and the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights, for which she is a member of the subcommittee on agenda and procedure. She is co-chair of the All-Party Juvenile Diabetes Caucus and the Canada-Cuba Interparliamentary Group.
  • She engaged in the modernization of the Senate Harassment and Violence Policy and sponsored Government Bill C-65: An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (harassment and violence).
  • She founded and directed the Moncton-based not-for-profit Support to Single Parents Inc. for over 30 years. She is a founding member of St. James Court Inc., an affordable housing complex for single parents.
  • She was co-chair of the Provincial Minister’s Working Group on Violence Against Women, served on the board of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research, and was the New Brunswick co-chair for the Women’s World March 2000.
  • She obtained a master’s of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University and practiced as a registered social worker for over 30 years. She taught Introduction to Family Violence Issues at the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Nursing.
  • Senator Hartling is a Member of the Order of New Brunswick and received the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case for her community service.
